Fire safety and occupancy: what venues need on file

Venues that host weddings, conferences and functions are inspected on fire safety and occupancy. Getting caught out just before a big event is expensive and stressful, so it pays to check your paperwork early.

Keep these current

  • Fire extinguishers and hoses, serviced and tagged
  • Clearly marked, unobstructed emergency exits
  • Your approved occupancy figure for each function space
  • An evacuation plan that staff know and have practised
  • Electrical and gas compliance certificates where they apply

Temporary structures

Marquees and stages put up for events may need their own approval. Check with the organiser and the municipality well before the date.

Requirements differ by property and use. Confirm what applies to you with the municipal fire department.

Members can raise questions about this at the next HTA stakeholder meeting, or contact the committee.
